Due to the rapid increase in traffic volume since 1975, the construction of the 4th tube of the Elbe Tunnel was urgently necessary. It serves to reduce the daily traffic jams on the BAB A7 motorway. The implementation of this once-in-a-century type of project, constituted a great challenge due to the complex geological conditions. The most demanding structure on the 4.4 km long total section to be built is the 3.1 km long bored tunnel, driven using a tunnelling shield. The 14.20 m outer diameter tunnel reaches down to 42 m below the Elbe River. The geological structures offered the greatest challenge since all types of soil from glacial till to sand were encountered.
