Tunnelling Division

Within the Royal Bam Group, the Tunnelling Division, which is based in Frankfurt and also has an office in Antwerp, Belgium, is the competence centre for mechanized tunnelling.

Tunnelling in soft ground is a challenge to every engineer. To ensure minimum settlement tunnelling, particularly in inner city areas, and to make tunnelling below the groundwater table possible, Wayss & Freytag has initiated and decisively influenced the development of today's slurry shields and earth pressure balance shields.

Today, the Tunnelling Division can look back on more than 180 km of driven tunnels, including water, road and railway tunnels with bored diameters varying from 4 m to over 14 m.

The Tunnelling Division is mainly active in Germany, Benelux and adjoining countries as well as in the United Kingdom.

Further important fields of activity are tunnelling using mining techniques outside the area of responsibility of the Southern Division, pipe jacking, construction of caissons and the refurbishment of tunnels.
