In Germany, the construction of traffic tunnels started in 1837 with the construction of three railway tunnels on the Cologne-Aachen line. After the Second World War large new lines, such as the Hannover-Würzburg, Mannheim-Stuttgart, and Cologne-Rhine/Main lines, were built in the course of the electrification of the railway system. Conventional mining techniques are still being used today to build large tunnels if the ground conditions are such that shield tunnelling offers no advantage.
At present, the construction of the Grouft Tunnel in the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg offers a great challenge to the engineers and tunnel workers of our company. Two tubes, each almost 3,000 m long, are being driven using the drill & blast method. Data about other projects under construction is available via the links in the margin.
